This project was inspired by the Rochester's rich culture and beautiful geography. Taking on an existing space, this project dealt with overcoming architectural constraints and challenges.
Taking inspiration from the Genesee River, Water’s Edge focuses on the flow of the river and the sense of mystery hidden in it’s translucent depths. The space provides a calming, yet thought-provoking atmosphere by playing with light and transparency. Taking into consideration the building’s unique layout, the space prioritizes ease of movement for both customers and staff throughout the space.
Walking into the space, you are greeted by the host stand. The dark walls and and flooring provide contrast to the illuminated features and light furnishings.
Continuing in, guests may come to the waiting area or sit at the bar. These spaces flow into one another allowing guests to use them for either purpose. The bar is inspired by the many waterfalls found along the Genesee River. Colored glass cascades down into the stone bar, like water crashing into the rocks below.
Moving further in you will find banquette seating. These dividing walls provide visual and acoustic privacy to guests and serve as the back of the banquettes. The tables are movable and may be rearranged to accommodate larger parties.
Continuing on to the other seating options, you will find tables for two and tables for four. A ceiling cloud covers the back tables to absorb sound and provide guests with a more intimate experience.
Away from the main dining area is the private dining room which could be rented out for parties. This room features two ceiling clouds at differing heights to provide intrigue and mystery to the space.
